The “In Our Hearts Forever” sculpture honors the lives of patients
St. Louis Children’s Hospital dedicated a sculpture in October 2012 as a tribute to all children who have been served by the hospital. The “In Our Hearts Forever” sculpture stands among greenery in a courtyard near the front entrance to the hospital.
Brother Mel Meyer, Society of Mary, created the sculpture to honor children for the loving way they touch others’ lives. Its form provides symbolic meaning:
- The figures are abstract, but, together, are on a shared journey.
- The child in the heart space touches lives.
- The base is elevated as a reminder that relationships are touched by Earth but go beyond that which we understand.
Through the continued support of the St. Louis Children's Hospital Foundation for the work of bereavement care, this sculpture was funded and donated by the family of Jason Lohr, who passed away in 2007.
The sculpture fulfills an ongoing request for a designated place on hospital grounds for parents, families and caregivers to pause and remember patients.
“We wanted to find a special way to remember our patients,” says Mary Lucido, long-time Caring Friend at St. Louis Children's Hospital. “These children are in our hearts forever, and it’s important to celebrate their lives."
