Program Overview
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects every aspect of a child’s life including academic performance, social interactions, and emotional well-being. It requires ongoing education, support and resources from a medical team. The successful self-management of diabetes is critical to the prevention of both short-term and life-threatening diabetes complications.
The Healthy Kids Express– Diabetes Program is the first mobile pediatric diabetes unit in the nation. It brings a team of diabetes experts including our Washington University Physician partners to underserved area schools. This program serves school-aged children with a focus on middle and high school ages.
St. Louis Children's Hospital is one of the world’s leading treatment and clinical research centers for diabetes, providing comprehensive care for pediatric patients throughout the entire diagnostic and treatment process. It is also the only pediatric hospital in St. Louis accredited by the American Diabetes Association. Historically, St. Louis Children's Hospital was the first to treat a diabetic child in the United States with insulin.
