Why is there a weapons detection system at St. Louis Children’s Hospital?
To keep everyone safe, the hospital has installed the Evolv Weapons Detection System at entrances. This system helps improve security while making it easy for people to enter the hospital.
Where is the system used?
The Evolv system is at the main entrance, Emergency Department entrance, and employee entrance of the hospital.
Are weapons allowed inside?
No, weapons are not allowed anywhere on hospital property, including parking garages. Security officers will enforce this rule.
What if I have a concealed carry permit?
Even with a permit, you cannot bring weapons into the hospital. Please leave them at home. If you bring a weapon, you will be asked to remove it before entering.
How long does the security screening take?
The Evolv system is faster than other metal detectors, screening up to 4,000 people per hour. You do not need to remove keys, phones, or small items from your pockets.
Do other hospitals use this system?
Yes, many hospitals and public places in the U.S. use the Evolv system.
What happens if a weapon is found?
- A security team member will get an alert.
- They will do a secondary screening to check the item.
- If it is a weapon, you will be asked to remove it before entering.
What is secondary screening?
If the system flags an item, security will:
- Scan you with a handheld tool without touching you.
- Visually check your bags or belongings.
What if I tell you I have a weapon when I arrive?
You will not be allowed in until the weapon is removed. You can return once you no longer have the weapon. If a patient has a weapon, it will be secured safely until the patient leaves the hospital property.
How does security know where to search?
The Evolv system uses sensors to find a weapon, helping security do a targeted search.
Will medical implants trigger the system?
No, implants like pacemakers should not set off the detector. The Evolv system does not use typical metal detection.
What about pregnant women?
The system is safe for pregnant people. If uncomfortable, you can ask for a different screening.
Can I go through with a stroller, wheelchair, or car seat?
Yes, but you may need to remove any attached bags and carry them separately.
Who can I talk to for questions or feedback?
