St. Louis Children’s Hospital has a multidisciplinary team of pediatric neurosurgeons, neurologists, pediatricians, neuroradiologists, anesthesiologists, and physicians who work together to protect the brains and development of children with Moyamoya.
Moyamoya is a disease of abnormal blood vessels in the brain that can occur in children. It leads to narrowing and blood clot formation that prevents the brain from getting enough blood. Without treatment, Moyamoya can cause strokes or bleeding into the brain.
Our hospital has experience caring for children with all types of Moyamoya, including that which is associated with other conditions. A typical evaluation for a child newly diagnosed with Moyamoya includes:
- Consultation with a pediatric neurosurgeon
- An evaluation with in the Pediatric Neurology Cerebrovascular Program
- Review of imaging by our pediatric neuroradiologists
- Cerebral angiogram, performed by a neurointerventional radiologist
For children who have Moyamoya in the setting of other chronic conditions, care is coordinated with their specialty providers, including sickle cell disease, Down syndrome, and neurofibromatosis.
