A rising fever alarmed one-month-old Cam’s parents, Molly and Chris. When they arrived at Alton Memorial Hospital their fears were confirmed. The ER team suspected meningitis and recommended immediate transport to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for the special care Cam would need to fight this life-threatening disease.
Thankfully, the Children’s critical care Transport Team has a satellite base at Alton Memorial,so when the call to transport Cam came in at 3 a.m., they were able to get him stabilized and comfortable in their Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) on the road to Children’s Hospital.
During the trip, there were several times when Cam’s breathing slowed and even stopped. The team of pediatric nurses and paramedics gave him breathing treatments and kept him stable for the 40 mile trip.
After an eight-day stay at Children’s, Cam went home to recover.
Today he is a healthy and rambunctious 13-month-old, who loves running around and watching car shows with his dad.
