It was just another day at the park, playing softball with her friends, when Lily had a tragic accident that forever changed her life. She was running back to the softball field when she fell backwards and hit her head on concrete.
Lily was immediately transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with a severe traumatic brain injury. Under the expert care of the neurocritical care team, Lily was kept in a medically induced coma for seven days.
“We just trusted the doctors and nurses to do what they were best at and help our daughter,” said Lily’s mom.
Due to the extent of her injuries, doctors told Lily’s parents that their daughter had a 40% chance of dying.
But Lily was a fighter. She survived two bedside surgeries and months of physical and speech therapy in the neuro-rehabilitation unit at the hospital. Lily’s parents credit Dr. Jose Pineda and the entire critical care team for helping their daughter beat the odds.
“Having all the specialists together in one place made all the difference in our daughter’s recovery.” said Lily’s mom. “The medical and emotional support we received from the staff and the outpouring of support from friends was overwhelming.”
Now, Lily is back living the life of a normal 12 year old ……going to school, hanging out with friends and, of course, playing softball.
