One question physical therapists often hear is: What running shoe is best for my child? Theresa Coverick, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, cautions that the type of shoe runners wear won’t improve their form, and young fledgling runners should avoid shoes with lots of cushion. Instead, look for shoes that are firm and lightweight, which will allow for the development of good running form.
If your young athlete is still having problems running due to injury, it may be helpful to consult with their doctor for an assessment and physical therapy referral.
