Macrodactyly is an uncommon, congenital condition in which a baby’s toes or fingers are abnormally large due to the overgrowth of the underlying bone and soft tissue. The cause of this condition is unknown.
A pediatric orthopedist can diagnose macrodactyly based on a child’s history and physical examination of the hands and feet. The doctor may also take x-rays or have an MRI performed.
Treatment for macrodactyly depends on if the condition is static or progressive. Some treatment options include the following:
- Surgery
- Soft tissue debulking
- Shortening procedures
- Resection
- Watchful waiting
