Expert diagnosis
The symptoms of MS in children can be similar to many other childhood disorders. This can make diagnosing MS in children or adolescents particularly challenging for people who are not experts in the disease. That’s why having a team of experts in pediatric MS is critical to getting a clear diagnosis so your child can begin treatment as quickly as possible.
Center of Excellence
The center is one of only 12 pediatric multiple sclerosis (MS) Centers of Excellence in the country designated and funded by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Experience with all forms of demyelinating diseases, from the most common to the rarest, including:
-
Autoimmune demyelinating diseases, including transverse myelitis, optic neuritis, neuromyelitis optica
-
Leukodystrophies, including Krabbe’s disease, adrenoleukodystrophy, Alexander disease and Canavan disease
-
Autoimmune encephalopathies, including ADEM (acute disseminated encephalomyelitis)
Team approach
Symptoms of MS and other demyelinating diseases can vary widely, affecting different parts of the body. Because symptoms of pediatric MS and other demyelinating diseases are so varied, we take a team approach that includes clinicians from a variety of specialties such as neuroradiology, genetics and urology.
Clinical trials and other research
We continually conduct research on pediatric MS and other demyelinating diseases to find better ways to treat them. That means that your child will have access to new and experimental treatments before they are widely available. The center is also a part of the Network of Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Centers (NPMSC) and participates in research with this network.
Supportive care
The emotional effects of having a chronic autoimmune disease can take a toll on children and adolescents. We focus on providing both supportive medical and emotional care as part of your child’s treatment.
Nationally recognized care
St. Louis Children’s Hospital is ranked #7 in the country for pediatric neurology and neurosurgery by U.S. News & World Report. This high ranking is due in part to our excellent patient outcomes, specialized clinics and advanced clinical services.
