When you arrive at the Dana Brown Emergency Room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, you can expect to receive outstanding medical and compassionate care.

Just like at the airport, you will walk through a secured area into our main “triage” area.  Here, a pediatric emergency nurse will greet you and ask a few questions so that we can get your child’s medical team ready.  The nurse will ask about your child’s reason for coming to the ER, and take vital signs like weight and temperature.

You may be asked to wait with your child for a few minutes in the main waiting room before going to one of our 30 private treatment rooms.  Once in the treatment room, your child will receive a thorough evaluation by a pediatric nurse, and be seen by a Washington University board-certified pediatric provider.  They will determine if any X-rays or additional tests are needed, and determine the best course of treatment for your child.

Depending upon your child’s medical condition, additional specialists may also care for your child while in the ER.  We have pediatric experts in every specialty, including orthopedics, neurology, surgery, pulmonary medicine and cardiology.

Most of the time, our patients get to go home directly from the ER.  In some cases, your child may need to receive additional care and be admitted to the hospital.

Helpful items to bring to the ER:

  • List of child’s medications
  • List of known allergies
  • List of immunizations
